Four things happening in the Austinarea to prepare for arctic blast

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Ahead of the forecast calling for a possible light wintry mix in Central Texas next week, several organizations are taking steps to prepare roads and facilities.
Texas Department of Transportation crews have started pretreating major corridors. Crews are applying a saltwater solution in an effort to prevent ice from forming on the road. TxDOT crews also ask if you see a truck playing down that material, to keep around 200 feet back.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department is working to preserve our outdoor spaces. The department, posting on X, announced city pools will close Monday and Tuesday for 'winterization.' That does not include Barton Springs Pool on Monday, which will be open for swimmers, at their own risk, as no lifeguards will be on duty. Barton Springs Pool will be shut down on Tuesday, however. The department will also close all park restrooms and drinking fountains Saturday mid-morning, with plans to reopen on Thursday. City workers will make efforts to winterize those facilities as well.
ERCOT has issued a weather watch from January 20-23. Electric Reliability Council of Texas made the call due to the expectations of higher electrical demand and the potential for lower reserves. However, at this time, the grid conditions are expected to be normal and people are not asked to conserve energy.
The City of Austin announced it will open overnight cold shelters Saturday night, and keep them open nightly until at least Wednesday. It also intends to allow those staying in the shelter overnight Sunday to stay throughout the day Monday due to the forecast. People who want to go are asked to go to One Texas Center at 505 Barton Springs Road. Registration happens each day between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
