AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin's Jaden Greathouse is coming off the best game he's ever had in a Notre Dame uniform and Round Rock's Leonard Moore is having one of the best seasons ever by a Fighting Irish freshman heading into the College Football Playoff national championship game. Greathouse, a sophomore who graduated from Westlake and helped lead the Chaparrals to three state championships, looked like he was back in Chaparral Stadium against Penn State in the CFP semifinals at the Orange Bowl on Jan. 9. He hauled in seven catches for 105 yards including a 54-yard touchdown in a 27-24 win to propel the Irish into the national championship game Jan. 20 against Ohio State. Reports: Former Longhorns receiver Johntay Cook II no longer with Washington Huskies Moore, a standout for the Round Rock Dragons, was named the Football Writers Association of America Freshman Defensive Player of the Year after a stellar season. Moore broke up 10 passes this season, fifth-best among FBS freshmen, forced a pair of fumbles with two interceptions and 43 tackles. The FWAA gave Moore the nod for player of the year over Texas defensive end Colin Simmons and West Virginia linebacker Josiah Trotter. As they prepare for the Buckeyes, Greathouse said the Fighting Irish is going to live up to their name. "We have a good opponent ahead of us and fine-tuning everything," he said. "We're going to come ready to fight." "I have a lot of former teammates on the team and a lot of family and friends that root for Texas, but I'm excited to play Ohio State," he said. Moore, alongside All-American safety Xavier Watts and the rest of the Fighting Irish secondary, will be in for a challenge against Ohio State's pass catchers on the outside. He said he's up to the task, though. LIST: Texas Longhorns in the transfer portal or declaring for the NFL draft "It's definitely exciting, and I'm not necessarily motivated by who we're going against, but being in a national championship is an accomplishment of its own and I'm excited to get after it," he said. "You expect a game like this to be a challenge, so it's just about trusting my technique and what we've been doing all year." Moore made his first collegiate start Sept. 28 against Louisville and made his first interception Oct. 26 against Navy. He was thrust into action due to Benjamin Morrison's hip injury and subsequent surgery knocked him out for the season. Being the guy filling in for an All-American isn't the easiest thing to do, especially as a freshman, but Moore's precocious attitude has helped him. "You've got to be mature and poised to be out there at cornerback, so this season has helped me being in big moments when you need to make a stop when the season is on the line," he said.
