1 dead after truck drove off Arlington Memorial Bridge, into Potomac river

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The United States Park Police confirmed that a person is dead after a pickup truck drove off the Arlington Memorial Bridge and fell into the Potomac River Thursday evening.
The incident happened on Jan. 16, when the truck was involved in a crash with another vehicle. During the collision, the truck went through the bridge's concrete railing and landed in the river, according to a spokesperson with the DC Fire and EMS Department.
Divers were called to the scene, where they searched for the truck and the driver.

After about 22 minutes, the fire department said a person was pulled from the water and brought to shore. They were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Two people, who were in the other car, which remained on the bridge, sustained minor injuries. Only one of them went to the hospital for treatment.

In an update on Friday morning, the United State Park Police confirmed that the person who was pulled from the river died in the hospital.
Police told DC News Now that it is unclear if the person was a driver or passenger and have reason to believe there may have been more than one person in the truck.
The Arlington Memorial Bridge remained closed and officials said it is unclear when it will reopen.
