ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Some new details were revealed on an upcoming project for the Seneca Park Zoo. County Executive Adam Bello announced Friday that the national architecture firm CambridgeSeven will be leading the design of the project. They will also be in charge of the zoo for future generations. The project includes a $100 million tropics exhibit and a front entry plaza capital project at the zoo. These will finish Phase II of the Seneca Park Zoo capital project. Bello says the project will feature new exhibits, new animals, and amenities. The 22,000-square-foot entry plaza will include classroom, education, and event spaces. The 48,000-square-foot tropics building will feature a forest, tropical islands, a Pacific reef exhibit, and a 150,000-gallon Pacific reef tank. The anticipated species for the exhibit include orangutans, lemurs, Komodo dragons, clouded leopards, jellyfish, mud skippers, and more. During the press conference, Bello explained the importance of the zoo — that too often people are focused on technology and not on the world around them. He wants the zoo to re-claim that focus for the community. "This indoor rainforest is going to provide an opportunity for our entire community to witness and experience together something that they could never otherwise experience someplace else," Bello said. The project was funded with over $4 million from Governor Hochul and Empire State Development. Monroe County invested over $44 million into the project. It was revealed last summer that the project faced some challenges, mainly that the cost for the project was over what they estimated. Bello said during the press conference that the project will remain within the budget.
