ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 20 this year and the Rochester community has many events planned to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King.
News 8 has compiled a list of commemorations and special events by location in the list below:
Brighton
MLK Day Commemoration
The Town of Brighton will be hosting a celebration of Dr. King at Empire State University, featuring student speakers from Our Lady of Mercy, Twelve Corners Middle School, and Brighton High School.
Dr. Ruth Holland Scott is the town's "Keeper of the Dream" honoree — Dr. Scott lived through segregation, became the Dean of Women at Madison High School, and went on to be the first African-American woman to serve on the Rochester City Council.
The event will be held Friday from 12 to 1 p.m.
Pittsford
MLK Living the Dream Series
Residents are invited to attend the rest of the events in the MLK Living the Dream Series at United Church in Pittsford.
On January 22, there will be a poetry slam session featuring Shanterra Mitchum reciting work inspired by Dr. King. Community members are invited to share their poetry as well.
On January 29, a film screening will be held by local filmmaker and photographer Rashaad Parker, with a discussion following the screening.
On February 2, multiple congregations will come together at the church for Interfaith Family Service. There will be a guest speaker, musical performances, and a choir.
Rochester
1199SEIU MLK Celebration
Healthcare workers with the local 1199 will be celebrating Dr. King at Strong Memorial Hospital in the Class of '62 Auditorium.
According to the union, Dr. King has called 1199 his favorite union and has called it the "authentic conscience of the labor movement" before his death.
Special guests this year include Judge Van Henri White, the union's senior executive vice presidents, local dance groups and poets, and more. It will be held on January 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Garth Fagan Dance's MLK Day Classes
The Garth Fagan Dance School has a tradition — offering the people of Rochester a free day of dance classes in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Any would-be students are recommended to pre-register for the event or sign up 20 minutes before the class. Students will be barefoot as they learn their dance moves.
The class schedule for January 20 is below:
11 a.m.-12 p.m.: 5-7-year-olds
11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.: 8-12-year-olds.
12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m.: 13+ Beginner Intermediate
2 p.m.-3:15 p.m.: Adult Intermediate/Advanced
Greater Rochester Martin Luther King Jr. Commission
The Rochester community is invited to the Greater Rochester Martin Luther King Jr. Commission at Kodak Hall.
The event was put together by the Eastman School of Music and will be help from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
MLK Basketball Clinics
Two organizations will be holding basketball clinics on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Nazareth University will hold a men's basketball clinic at the Golisano Training Center. That will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Around that same time, the community organization Jazz Network will be hosting a girls' basketball clinic at the Rochester Sports Garden on East Henrietta Road. That will be on MLK Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
MLK Day at RMSC
The Rochester Museum & Science Center has multiple programs and activities set up for MLK Day — button-making, listening to Dr. King's speeches in the auditorium, a coloring station, and more.
Many of these activities go from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Strong Museum's Day of Compassion
The Strong National Museum of Play is hosting its Day of Compassion on MLK Day, which features some performances and attractions based on Dr. King.
At 11:30 a.m. in the Adams Atrium are the musical talents of the Dreamseeds band. Starting at 1 p.m. is "Meet Dr. King," a performance at the Paychex Theatre showcasing the life and work of the civil rights leader. Guests can also add their dreams for the future to the Wall of Hope in the Adams Atrium.
University of Rochester's MLK Commemorative Address
Actor Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in "Do The Right Thing" and "The Mandalorian," will be delivering the University of Rochester's MLK Commemorative Address.
The university has instituted the keynote speech to honor Dr. King's legacy. It is scheduled for January 30 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
