SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Monday marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday that's recognized annually in January to celebrate his life and achievements. There is a wave of events scheduled for the weekend and Monday to honor the influential American civil rights leader, including a parade, a 5K run and more. Here's a break down of MLK Jr. events in San Diego: What’s closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in San Diego County? 43rd annual MLK Jr. Parade On Sunday, this annual parade is set to kick off at 11 a.m., starting along San Diego's Harbor Drive and extending from Ash Street to Pacific Highway. Those in attendance can expect to see an array of floats, along with live performances from high school bands and drill teams. Also walking in the parade will be fraternities, sororities, churches, along with peace and youth organizations. MLK Jr. Harmony Health Festival Head to Water Park between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday to honor MLK Jr. at this local festival. As explained by the event's organizers, it incorporates harmony, health and wellness alongside the celebration of King's legacy. There will be a number of vendors and exhibitors who feature activities, workshops and resources dedicated to promoting a healthy lifestyle. MLK Jr. 5K Run/Walk This 5K, honoring King, is for both the runners and the walkers. For those who wish to participate, head to the Embarcadero Sunday to get moving. The race starts at 9 am. at Harbor Drive and Ash Street. The route is a scenic 3.1-mile course along the waterfront and back. There is also a shorter one mile route. Be sure to register online 36th Annual MLK Jr. Day Celebration at Worldbeat Cultural Center This family-friendly celebration, located at Balboa Park, will feature cultural craft vendors, guest speakers like Dr. Richard Rose and Nikishia Garrett, a Native American blessing by Red Bird and the Red Warriors, an African drum and dance performance, and a number of bands. The event kicks off at noon on Monday and will continue until 6 p.m. MLK Jr. Day Nature Walk A guide with Mission Trails Regional Park will lead the outdoorsy on a special Martin Luther King Day nature walk, where participants will learn about the plants, animals, geology, history, and ecology of the park on scenic trails. The walk will start from the Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Be sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring along water. MLK Day of Service The purpose of Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, slated for Monday, is for people to volunteer their time to improve the communities they live in as a way to honor his legacy. The local non-profit HandsOn San Diego has provided a list of projects in which locals can participate.
