TOPEKA (KSNT) - Lawmakers received a new bill in the Kansas Legislature this week which, if enacted, would make changes to hunting and fishing licenses for youths and older adults. Representative Ken Corbet introduced House Bill 2028 to the Kansas Legislature on Thursday, Jan. 16. The bill, if passed in its current form, would require the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) to offer discounted senior combination hunting and fishing passes to state residents who are above the age of 65. Corbet's proposed changes to existing state law in HB 2028 would also remove the expiration date for the Kansas kids lifetime hunting and fishing license on July 1, 2032. These changes would be accomplished by altering language in the current state statutes for wildlife, parks and recreation. What fish are bad for your health in Kansas? Kansas wildlife officials halted sales of its lifetime hunting and fishing licenses to older adults in October 2024 due to an oversight. The KDWP reported that officials found the statute that authorizes the agency to sell the licenses at a reduced rate had expired. Existing state law shows the licenses were only allowed to be offered by the KDWP from Jan. 1, 2013, through to June 30, 2020. Commissioners with the KDWP were offered a possible solution to the issue created by the expiring law during a meeting in November 2024. Legal counsel offered the proposal that the KDWP establish three five-year licenses for older adults at prices of $50-$90. The sale of lifetime hunting and fishing licenses has brought in more than $5 million in revenue to the state from 2019 to 2024.
