RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Richmond Symphony is preparing for two powerful performances on Saturday, Jan. 18 and Sunday, Jan. 19 at the Carpenter Theatre at the Dominion Energy Center. On Saturday at 8 p.m., audiences are invited to the ''Celebration of Black Music in Film'' featuring Butcher Brown. The performance will highlight black films and their soundtracks with performances from tracks like Superfly, Do the Right Thing, Purple Rain and many more. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and ticket prices range from $10 to $86. On Sunday at 3 p.m., the symphony will perform ''Celebrate MLK'' to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through chamber music, with doors to open at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for college students with a valid student ID. Tickets are free for children aged 18 and under. 8News spoke with Christopher Anderson, the vice president of marketing and sales at the Richmond Symphony, who said this weekend is a perfect showcase of the symphony's depth. "I think it says that the Richmond Symphony is a member of this community, and we recognize that this community does not prefer or look for one particular type of music," Anderson said. "The talent and the breadth and the quality that Richmond Symphony can produce can cover all of it. So, we can have Bach and Beethoven one day, and we can have Superfly the next." Performance and ticket information can be found on the Richmond Symphony's website.
