PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Two Rhode Island men have been convicted of murdering a pregnant woman and dumping her body in a Coventry pond.
Gary Gromkiewicz, 37, and Michael Lambert, 47, were found guilty Friday of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the death of 34-year-old Leila Duarte Da Luz.
Da Luz’s body was discovered on the morning of Dec. 21, 2022, by a fisherman at Carbuncle Pond. Investigators determined her cause of death to be a combination of blunt force injuries and drowning. At the time of her death, she was eight to ten weeks pregnant with Gromkiewicz’s child.

The trial, which spanned two weeks, featured separate juries for Gromkiewicz and Lambert as each defendant was tried concurrently. Prosecutors presented digital data, witness testimony, and forensic evidence proving the two men coordinated to kill Da Luz and cover their tracks.
"[Leila] was a young woman who had immigrated from Cape Verde. She was well-educated. She had dreams. She had aspirations. She had hopes. But they were snuffed out during the early morning hours of December 21," Prosecutor Stephen Dambruch said during closing arguments Thursday.
Both men are scheduled to be sentenced on March 28.
