Polar plunge starts today; 20s and 30s for wind chills ahead
Jan 17, 2025
SIOUX FALLS SD (KELO) -- A bitterly cold forecast is ahead for KELOLAND this weekend. That means we will say good-bye to the mild weather today, with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s this morning and early this afternoon. Strong NW winds are developing and will expand through the entire region the next 6 to 12 hours.
Temperatures will climb in Sioux Falls through the early afternoon, then fall as the stronger NW winds enter the picture.
You can see the rise on the temperatures this morning and the fall across the region this afternoon on Futurecast. We expect hits of light snow this afternoon in western SD, but the strong winds will reduce visibilities for travelers. Also, if you are heading north to Fargo, a winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow has been posted today. Temperatures will be getting colder tonight, a trend that will continue all weekend.
Northwest winds are expanding across KELOLAND, with gusts near 40 mph this afternoon. While the wind speeds will not be as strong on Saturday, will still expect steady and bitterly cold winds of 15-30mph. Expect more wind both Sunday and Monday, so wind chills will continue to be a problem into early next week.
Speaking of wind chills, take a look at the forecast numbers below. We are forecasting subzero wind chills on Saturday, with minus teens and minus 20s for reading by Sunday morning. The worst of the wind chill will arrive on Monday morning, with -30s not out of the question in much of northern SD.
Snow chances in the 7-day forecast are limited here in the northern plains. Some snow does show up on days 7-14. However, there are good chances of snow and even accumulating snow early next week along the gulf coast! Even northern Florida may have more snow on the ground by Tuesday than Sioux Falls.
Temperatures will recover by the middle of next week. It's looks like KELOLAND will be on an island of "mild" weather for at least a few days.
Here are the details of the forecast.
