MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- An Arctic blast is headed toward the Mid-South and now is the time to prepare for it. “It’s dangerously cold weather that we are talking about,” said Todd Demers, WREG meteorologist. Locals can expect to feel it as soon as Saturday. Check the latest forecasts from WREG Weather “So the start of the dropping temperatures is tomorrow and then by the time we get to Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we are going to be feeling the coldest air we had so far this season,” Demers said. Wind chills are expected to be in the single digits and temperatures in the teens. “When it’s cold I get it. Everyone wants to put that space heater right next to them but you have to realize everything can burn especially most of the time – I know for me when I get warm I want to fall asleep and that’s the most dangerous thing you can do is leave that space heater on while you go to sleep and that’s where we see the majority of the fire," said Qwanesha Ward, PIO officer with the Memphis Fire Department. Ward says your space heater should always be three feet away from anything and never use your oven or stove as a heat source.  “Plan ahead, be proactive and get ready for this big cold snap we got coming," Ward said. “Not record lows but you combine that with the gusting Northwesterly winds and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable for those spending time outside.” When the cold snap arrives, the Memphis Fire Department plans to open warming stations for those in need.
