LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Friday! Enjoy your afternoon today because more bitter cold and some snow will be on the way by the end of the weekend. Friday is your first (possibly only) Dillon Gaudet “Go Day” of January 2025! The weekend is shaping up to be an active one across the region, featuring a wide variety of weather conditions. After a chilly start to Friday, a southerly breeze will push temperatures higher into the afternoon, ranging from the 50s in southern Kentucky to the mid-to-upper 40s across the Bluegrass region. Rain will move in late Friday night into Saturday morning, marking the beginning of a wet and eventually wintry weekend. Saturday: Falling Temperatures and Transition to Snow Rain will dominate much of Saturday morning as temperatures start in the upper 30s to mid-40s before dropping steadily behind an arctic cold front sweeping through the area. By late afternoon into evening, the rain will gradually transition to light snow from northwest to southeast. While snowfall will initially be light and scattered, southern and southeastern Kentucky could see some minor accumulations by Saturday night. Sunday: Snow Chances Continue and Bitter Cold Moves In On Sunday, the focus shifts to a developing system to our southeast. This system may bring accumulating snow to far southeastern Kentucky, with current projections indicating the potential for 1 to 3 inches of light, fluffy snowfall. Areas farther northwest could just see scattered flurries or light snow showers. Temperatures will struggle to climb above the 20s during the day, and a brisk northwest wind will keep wind chills in the teens. Arctic Blast Next Week As the snow moves out late Sunday, an arctic high-pressure system will bring bitterly cold air into the region. Monday and Tuesday will be especially frigid, with highs only in the teens and overnight lows plunging into the single digits, potentially dipping below zero in some spots. Wind chills will likely range from -5°F to 5° at times, making it critical to bundle up if you’re heading outdoors. Travel and Safety Notes Roads could become slick Saturday night into Sunday due to snow and potentially black ice. Prepare for hazardous wind chills early next week, which can cause frostbite with prolonged exposure.
