INDIANAPOLIS — A polar plunge is inbound with a blast of arctic air sending thermometers tumbling into the negatives to start the week. A mild weekend turns frosty as dangerous wind chills, as biting as -16 degrees, blast across central Indiana Sunday through Wednesday. The City of Indianapolis will open up Washington Park Family Center as an emergency overnight warming center to help shelter those in need from the dangerous cold. The shelter, located at 3130 E. 30th Street, will serve as a warming center during the frigid plunge from Sunday until Wednesday. It will open Sunday at 8 p.m. and remain open until 8 p.m. Wednesday. No sign-in or check-in will be required. While Washington Park will serve as the only overnight warming center, the city reminded that all Indy Parks Family Centers are available as warming centers during their regular hours. Some of the centers will be closed on Monday, due to being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but Washington Park, Garfield Park and Broad Ripple Park will remain open despite the holiday.
