Vice President Harris signs desk as part of longstanding tradition

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Vice President Kamala Harris carried out a long-standing tradition of signing her desk drawer on Thursday.
The decades-long tradition of signing the top drawer began in the 1940s.
“I stand in a long tradition as the 49th vice president of the United States, in a long tradition of vice presidents who have signed this desk and I do so with great honor, and with the knowledge that our work here has mattered. It has meaning. It has impacted people we may never meet,” Harris said.
Second gentleman Doug Emhoff stood in the background taking photos as Harris signed the desk with a Sharpie.
It’s not clear what the vice president’s plans are after leaving office on Monday.
“We're going to continue getting work done until Monday, and then I’ll keep you posted,” she said.
Vice President Harris thanked her staff and was met with applause as she became the first woman ever to sign the desk. Harris told her staff, “our work is not done” as the Trump administration prepares to return to return to the White House in just a few days.
