CHARLESTON, S.C. (WBTW) -- A woman accused of lying to FBI agents investigating the disappearance and eventual death of Brittanee Drexel is scheduled to be sentenced in February.
Angel Vause, the longtime girlfriend of Drexel’s killer Raymond Moody, is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 13 in U.S. District Court in Charleston, Justice Department spokesperson Veronica Hill told New13 on Friday. She pleaded guilty on Sept. 9 to three counts of making a false statement to federal agents and faces up to 24 years behind bars.
Drexel, from Rochester, New York, went missing while vacationing with friends during spring break in Myrtle Beach in April 2009. Her remains were not found until May 2022 in a remote area of Georgetown County.
Moody was arrested a week before authorities recovered Drexel’s remains and charged with murder, kidnapping, and criminal sexual conduct. He pleaded guilty in October 2022 and is currently serving a life sentence.
Vause agreed in July to plead guilty in U.S. District Court in Charleston to two counts of making false statements to federal agents — each carrying a penalty of five years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
But on Aug. 15 — the planned date of her sentencing — both sides agreed to a continuance after the penalty was upgraded to a maximum of eight years for each count.
Moody confessed in October 2022 to killing Drexel. Five months earlier, Vause told an FBI agent she went home to get keys from a truck while Drexel was being assaulted and killed, but federal indictments indicated that she said she was actually going somewhere else.
Authorities also said Vause told the FBI that Drexel had her cellphone the entire time, but it was later proven that Vause had it before tossing it somewhere between Georgetown and Charleston.
Prosecutors said Vause played a critical role in forcing Moody’s confession because they initially built a case against her before he claimed responsibility.
