MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Police in Mount Pleasant are warning about an increase in ‘jury duty’ scams that involve callers impersonating law enforcement. The Mount Pleasant Police Department said scammer tells the victim they did not show up for jury duty and that there is a warrant for their arrest unless money is sent by either gift card or digital currency, like bitcoin. “We ask the public not to send money to someone they do not know or to someone trying to extort money in this way,” the department said. Law enforcement agencies will never ask for money, gift cards, or access to your bank account and they do not collect fines over the phone or at their headquarters. If you feel you have been a victim, contact the Mount Pleasant Police Department to file a report at 843-884-4176. “If you are contacted by someone asking for bitcoins or impersonating a police officer, please file a police report with the Mount Pleasant Police Department before proceeding,” the department added. The warning comes nearly one week after a Charleston woman said she lost $3,000 in one of these scams. She told News 2 that a convincing scammer called her about an alleged warrant for missing jury duty. The caller provided the victim with an old address and stated she was served there. She was then asked to purchase money cards per the caller’s instructions. He then asked the woman to read off the numbers. Before she realized what was happening, the money was gone. Once scammers have those numbers, the money cannot be recovered.
