Bills injuries: Ray Davis still in concussion protocol
Jan 17, 2025
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Bills running back Ray Davis remains in concussion protocol on Friday, two days before Buffalo is set to take on the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC divisional round, coach Sean McDermott said Friday.
It puts Davis' availability for Sunday's game in question. He left the game after a hit to the head in the third quarter of Buffalo's AFC wild card game against the Denver Broncos. He practiced in pads on Thursday while wearing a red non-contact jersey and a guardian cap.
Additionally, McDermott said that offensive lineman Alec Anderson (calf) is "trending in the right direction" after being limited in practice all week.
If Davis is out on Sunday it would mean a heavier workload for James Cook, who played in 45% of the offensive snaps last week.
For Baltimore, star wide receiver Zay Flowers is not expected to play in Sunday's game as he continues to deal with a knee injury, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday morning. He has not practiced all week.
Joe Brady has McDermott's 'full support' in head coaching interviews
McDermott said that offensive coordinator Joe Brady has his "full support" as Brady interviews for several head coaching jobs throughout the league.
Brady will interview for the head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, according to CBS Sports. He is also scheduled to interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, according to The Florida Times Union. He previously drew interest from the New York Jets, who put in a request with the Bills to interview Brady.
Brady, 35, would become the youngest head coach in the league if he is hired by a team with an opening.
"We've communicated on that over the last couple of weeks," McDermott said. "At the end of the day Joe has my full support, number one, I think he's earned that, and then two is everything in moderation. Keep the main thing the main thing. But Joe is wired in a way that he is a good person, he's a really good coach and he does a great job of keeping things in the proper order."
McDermott added that things have changed when it comes to interview processes since he was interviewing for head coaching jobs - he has been the Bills head coach since 2017 - and that balancing interviews and your current job can be challenging.
"To be as prepared as you want to be for both situations, playing and then also being able to interview at your best," he said. "It's changed over the years, even since when I went through it, they're trying to get it to where it's fair and conducive to being your best, so I appreciate that from the league's standpoint. At the end of the day we all have to go through the same set of rules, so it's fair across the board."
Brady's offensive coordinator contemporary, Baltimore's Todd Monken, is going through a similar process. He interviewed with Jacksonville on Thursday and will interview with the Chicago Bears on Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
