A Missouri man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for intentionally driving a U-Haul truck into barriers near the White House as part of an attack aimed at overthrowing the U.S. government and establishing a Nazi regime. Sai Varshith Kandula, an Indian native living legally living in Missouri, traveled hundreds of miles from St. Louis to Washington D.C. last year to carry out his coup. Hours after his arrival, he rented a box truck, and then crashed it into a gate at the intersection of H Street NW and 16th Street NW the night of May 22, 2023, just after 9:30 p.m., prosecutors said. Kandula exited the vehicle, pulled a Nazi flag out of his backpack and then laid it out on the ground before being taken into custody. He later told investigators his goal was to “attack and destroy” the U.S. government,” according to court documents. Kandula also said he would have arranged for the killing of President Joe Biden if it helped him reach his goal of installing a dictatorship similar to that of Nazi Germany. “He wanted to eliminate the democratic process in America and replace the government with a Nazi-style dictatorship,” they read. In May, he pleaded guilty to a charge of willful injury or depredation of property of the United States as part of a plea deal with prosecutors, limiting his prison term. His attorney, Scott Rosenblum, said Kandula was suffering from schizophrenia and was overwhelmed by delusional thoughts, among them that “a reptilian race had installed a puppet regime to operate the U.S.” With News Wire Services
