PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — There was a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message Thursday in Portsmouth. A special event was held at Norfolk Naval Shipyard before several hundred people, and guest speakers including former WAVY-TV 10 anchor Don Roberts were there. Despite retiring last year, Roberts is still very much involved in the community. It's so exciting to see so many people here to celebrate Dr. King and to live what he preached," Roberts said. "Just reach across the aisle, talk to each other, find out those commonalities that we have, maybe share some knowledge, some wisdom, maybe just be a friend. It's so easy to have a meaningful interaction like that and just get to know each other." Members of the African American Employee Resource Group held Thursday's event. The group is an important resource for hiring more Black workers in Hampton Roads.
