Kentucky communities receive more funds for disaster recovery
Jan 17, 2025
Communities in eastern Kentucky are getting some help from the state’s Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Program. $4.2 million dollars will go to Letcher County to replace waterlines and pump stations that were damaged in the 2022 floods.
The town of Jenkins is receiving nearly $7 million dollars to address projects around the ongoing repairs and prevention of flood damage. During a press conference, Mayor Todd DePriest said they will use $5.2 million to conduct a study of stormwater movement.
“That’s going to be a study to look at what’s needed after we’ve put green infrastructure pieces into that, how do we increase the quality of water downstream from us and how can we manage storms we’re bound to get in the future.”
DePriest said his city will also use $1.4 million to make improvements to the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
“It’s going to be used to upgrade the plant to build capacity to make processes better. That’s important to us because of the high ground site and the economic development piece with our industrial park.”
In total, eight projects were announced for a total of $21 million. The full list can be found here.
