Marcus’ 4 a.m. Friday forecast
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Rain arriving tonight will be followed by the coldest temperatures of the season over the extended forecast.
This morning:
We’re keeping an eye on some patchy fog that has developed in southwestern and western portions of Central Indiana. Some of this will expand into central portions of the states.
Meanwhile, temperatures are running just below freezing across much of Central Indiana this morning, which is a little warmer than this time Thursday morning.
Friday:
Outside of any morning fog, no problems are expected for the daytime hours today. Today should be the warmest day that we’ve had in two weeks and only the second time we will have above average temperatures. Look for highs to surge close to 40° this afternoon.
Rain moving in:
A cold front will approach the state very late tonight. This will bring some isolated rain showers just before midnight, but the main event in terms of widespread rain won’t move in until just after midnight. Temperatures will also hold relatively steady in the mid and upper 30s for much of the overnight hours.
Steady rain showers will continue all overnight into early Saturday morning. Eventually, the cold front will pass through by mid-morning, allowing for a rush of cold temperatures. By mid-morning, we will flip from rain to snow showers. As it appears now, the snow showers should be brief and relatively light. That said, there could be some very light accumulations by the time we get to the late morning hours.
Bitter cold returns:
Meanwhile, we will be getting a transition of falling temperatures for the next 36 hours. Well, our high temperature will go down to the upper 30s for Saturday, which will occur after midnight, and our numbers will continue to fall rapidly as we go through. Saturday afternoon.
Overnight Lows will fall to the teens as we head into Saturday night. Our numbers will continue to fall throughout Sunday as this arctic air mass settles in.
Frigid next week:
Bitter cold temperatures will be the theme as we enter into the new week. Look for overnight lows to fall below zero Sunday night and Monday night with wind chill ranging between 10 to 15° below zero.
We will remain bitterly cold through at least the middle of the week, with highs failing to reach 20° through Wednesday. Arctic high-pressure looks to move east by the end of the week, which should allow for a gradual warming trend for Thursday and Friday.
7 day forecast:
There is a chance for maybe some snow showers for Thursday into Friday, but models differ on the exact track of this next winter system moving through the eastern portions of the country
The 8 to 14-day outlook still looks cold with signals through the early portions of February of below-average temperatures
