SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — Several family members of a Durham man, 57-year-old Emmanuel Gbedee, filled inside a Johnston County courtroom Thursday afternoon.  For just a few minutes, it’s where they glimpsed 18-year-old, Tray’vian Brown of Dunn, who faces felony charges of first degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Brown stood before a judge in handcuffs while making his first appearance in court. It comes after the teen was arrested just a day earlier. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said Brown is accused of killing Gbedee, an Uber driver, after receiving a ride from the man. Deputies first reported that they responded to a suspicious person call around 1 a.m. on Sunday. During that call, deputies said they located Gbedee with a gunshot wound in the backseat of his car in Benson. Deputies said he was found a short distance from Holly Grove Road where they believe he had picked up Brown to give him a ride. Gbedee’s son, Emmanuel Gbedee Jr, said his father had dropped off his younger sister at a birthday party that same night. Deputies believe Gbedee and Brown had no connection or association before the incident. “He decided to pick up a ride and that ended up in a demise and we’re heartbroken,” said Gbedee’s son. Gbedee Jr. said that his father was a finance worker who was always willing to help others. The family mentioned that they had plans to celebrate Gbedee and his wife’s 30th anniversary approaching next month. While they’re relieved that deputies made an arrest, Gbedee’s son said the family remains heartbroken. “This was senseless, we have no connections to him or any idea where this came about,” Gbedee Jr. said. On Thursday, family members declined to comment after seeing Brown in court. Many were seen in the courtroom wiping away tears. District Court Judge Travis Wheeler allowed family members a moment to leave the courtroom after Brown’s appearance. “Considering the possible threat to the community, the court finds that there’s cause to set no bond in this case,” Wheeler said. Brown’s next appearance in court is set for Feb. 6.
