Ground has been broken at the Sunset Development property in Wickliffe. Wickliffe Mayor Joe Sakacs said this is long overdue since the property, the old Ponderosa lot, has been vacant for many years. “Hopefully many have noticed that ground has been broken,” he said. “I believe this will be one of our greatest accomplishments.” Ground has been broken at the Sunset Development property in Wickliffe. (Marah Morrison — The News-Herald) The townhome cottages development will be a 55 and up community located on the open field where the former Ponderosa once was at 29553 Euclid Ave. Many have asked about the property, Sakacs said. According to the Ohio Housing Finance Agency, the project is to include 28 one-bedroom units and 26 two-bedroom units in multiple cottage-style buildings. The cottages will have one-car garages and a driveway with room for a second car. Indoor and outdoor common areas will also be available, including a community building, fitness center and patios. All of the zoning for the property was passed last summer, according to Sakacs. Details on the cost of the homes, as well as availability will be provided upon being built. “Sunset Development has a couple of other existing developments in Columbus and Newton Falls,” Sakacs said. “Finally, it’s going to happen where the Ponderosa property is — wide open field next to Marino’s Bar and Grill to the west of that.” New homes are still slated for development at the Wickliffe Elementary School and Wickliffe Middle School properties, 1821 Lincoln Road and 29240 Euclid Ave. The former school buildings have been torn down for redevelopment in light of Wickliffe Schools preschool through 12th grade campus opening.
