Authorities have released the name of a 26-year-old man who was shot and killed earlier this week by San Diego police as well as the identities of the officers who fired their weapons.
Andrew Christian Engel of San Diego was shot after police responded just before 7 p.m. Monday to an apartment on E Street east of Eleventh Avenue in the East Village for reports of a “suicidal male.”
Two officers, Gavin Isa and Eric Moreno, arrived at the apartment and helped six other people out of the residence, the Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a release.
Engel, who was allegedly holding a knife, then “confronted” officers and began to approach them, said sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Krugh.
The officers commanded Engel to drop the knife, but he did not comply and continued to move toward officers, Krugh said.
Isa and Moreno then fired, striking Engel.
The officers performed medical procedures on Engel, who was taken to a hospital where he died.
Isa and Moreno have both been with the San Diego Police Department for 4½ years, the Sheriff’s Office said.
As is protocol with shootings involving San Diego police, the Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
