U.S. Marshals detail hunt for Rochester man in Uganda

Rochester, N.Y. (WROC) — Like with all cases involving a violent crime, police investigating the burning of a Rochester woman in 2019 on Augustine Street began looking for a suspect.
After attention turned to the victim's husband, David Johnson, though, the case took an unusual turn.
“It was pretty apparent in the initial investigation that he fled Rochester, where to they didn't know but they did know,” said Charles Salina of the U.S. Marhsal Service of Western New York.
Local police called in the U.S. Marshal Service.
They, along with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and other agencies began the process of tracking Johnson.
That effort took them to Jamaica.
“They came up with an alias that he had gotten, got a fake ID and at that point once they leave the country, we have to get our international branch involved. You have to work with the state department diplomatic security services and you have to feed information to the Department of Justice, the Monroe County District Attorney's Office,” Salina said.
Coming up dry in Jamaica, Salina says they pieced together Johnson's next destination: Uganda.
Five years later, U.S. law enforcement fed police in Uganda information as to Johnson's whereabouts.
“The deputy marshal who was originally assigned the case was able to fly over to Uganda with two other U.S. marshals and they extradited him back last weekend,” Salina said. “So he's back here in Monroe County and arraigned on the warrant and held at the Monroe County Jail.”
He's been charged with murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, and attempted arson in the third degree.
He is being held in jail without bail.
