DOJ: Fresno County men charged after fentanyl distribution ends in death
Jan 16, 2025
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Two Fresno County men were indicted on Thursday after a person died as a result of the distribution of fentanyl from both of them, the United States Department of Justice said.
The DOJ says a six-count indictment was unsealed Thursday, charging Austin Lloyd Kerns, 53, of Fresno and Lakota Tehya Wakley, 21, of Clovis with conspiring to distribute fentanyl. Additionally, Kerns was charged with fentanyl distribution and illegally possessing ammunition.
According to court documents, Kerns conspired with Wakley and others to sell fentanyl pills to customers in Fresno Country from November 2024 until his arrest in December 2024. On Nov. 23 and 24, 2024, Kerns repeatedly sold fentanyl to a victim that Wakley referred to Kerns for a fee.
The DOJ says the victim died soon after from a fentanyl overdose. Upon arresting Kerns at his home on Dec. 9, 20204, law enforcement seized around 1,000 fentanyl pills, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and handgun parts.
If convicted, Kerns and Wakley face maximum penalties of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine, per the DOJ.
