SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- An armed man who was shot and killed by police earlier this week inside an East Village apartment building has been identified. Christian Engel, 26, approached officers with a knife and refused to drop the weapon when two San Diego police officers, Gavin Isa and Eric Moreno, shot the suspect, Lt. Michael Krugh with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said in a news release Thursday. On Monday evening, police responded to a 911 call about a suicidal man at an apartment complex at 1150 East Street. When officers arrived on scene, the suspect's roommate told police Engel had attempted suicide using a knife. "While waiting for additional officers to arrive, the suicidal subject confronted the officers inside the apartment. The subject was holding a knife while quickly approaching the officers," Krugh said. Man shot dead in Oceanside identified Two officers fired their weapons after the suspect, who was continuing to move towards them, failed to drop the knife, according to authorities. Engel was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries. No officers were hurt during the shooting. Isa and Moreno have been with San Diego Police Department's Central Division Patrol for four and a half years. The incident remains under investigation.
