Seniors rally to save SF neighborhood Starbucks set to close
Jan 16, 2025
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- After serving up coffee in the same location for 30 years, a neighborhood Starbucks is closing up shop. Not if loyal patrons have anything to say about it.
Customers in the Barbary Coast neighborhood are gathering for what could be their last cup of coffee here at Starbucks.
"Everything else is gone we can't bear to lose this one," said one upset patron.
But the coffee giant has just informed them that's exactly what will happen on Feb. 9 when the lease is up. Neighbors, like organizer Diana Taylor, are rallying in hopes of buying more time.

"It's going to be shuttered for months. It's going to be dark here. It's so demoralizing for our community," Taylor said.
The neighborhood is home to many seniors who say they're hard-pressed to find a nearby cafe -- let alone any other retail shops, something new county supervisor Danny Sauter hopes to restore.
"I don't think this is time to abandon San Francisco, it's not time to jump ship," Sauter said.
With challenges like the unhoused and crime and post-pandemic, many shops have shuttered in the city's downtown. For its part, Starbucks says this is a financial decision and customers can find the nearest store location on the company app.
