(KRON) -- Five people were arrested following an organized retail theft operation, the Oakland Police Department announced Thursday. The suspects are connected to thefts at two Walgreens stores in Oakland. According to OPD, the thefts happened on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Broadway and Telegraph Avenue locations. The latter, located at 5055 Telegraph Ave., is one of the two Walgreens stores set to close in Oakland next month. Three of the adults arrested were at the Broadway store, and the other two were at the Telegraph location, OPD said. Officers recovered stolen merchandise, such as groceries and other health products. Walgreens said it was the “same reason(s) for all our closures,” which includes operating costs of rent, staffing and supply needs "These efforts play a vital role in deterring theft and ensuring the safety of community members and businesses. These efforts are part of OPD’s dedication to enhancing public safety," the department wrote in a press release.
