How do Kansas ranchers keep livestock warm in cold weather?
Jan 16, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) — With the temperatures expected to drop over the weekend, it can be a very tough time for ranchers keeping their livestock warm.
27 News spoke with the Kansas Livestock Association about what precautions ranchers take with their livestock. The organization says food and water are two of the most important things animals have when it gets colder.
Scarlett Madinger, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Livestock Association, explains what ranchers can do to block out the cold.
"They will start putting down bedding like straw, hay," Madinger said. "They will roll that out so there can be a layer between them and the ground when they want to lay down."

This past winter storm has already been the first test, but some ranchers are also starting calving season.
"If calves are being had, right now you wanna make sure that those calves are being kept warm," Madinger said. "So if a calf is born in these temperatures, the first thing you need to do is to make sure they are warm and then get them back to their mom as soon as possible."
The type of weather isn't new to Kansas or livestock. Madinger says ranchers try to make sure that caring for the animals is their top priority.
