SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A swearing in ceremony welcomed three of Springfields newest firefighters. For these firefighters, it was a very exciting day as all their hard work finally paid off.
At Springfield City Hall, Springfield Fire Commisioner BJ Calvi pinned a badge to each firefighters uniform. This comes after they graduated from their 10 weeks of training at the state fire academy. Now the department is getting them ready to start their first shift as a firefighter Monday morning.
"It's great to see three new members starting underneath the department and beginning a lifelong career of service tot he city. We put them through a week of EMS training and then a week of department training to orient them on how we do things here in the city of Springfield and get them up to par," said Calvi.
Springfield's newest firefighters are the following:
Austin Bushway
Christopher Patrick
Dylan Sliech
The department is working on getting another academy class for April. They are looking to put 20 more firefighters through that academy. Right now, the department has nearly 300 firefighters.
