VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is recovering after she was struck by a vehicle while changing a tire on the side of the road in Virginia Beach more than a week ago.
Paige McCoy was changing her tire on the side of the road last Wednesday, Jan. 8, when another car slammed into a parked car that then struck her.
She has been in the hospital recovering since the crash.
"It's hard,” McCoy's friend Dakota Edwards said. “I wish I could take the pain away from her.”
McCoy works for the cleaning company Two Maids. She was on her way back to the office when she got the flat tire on Centerville Turnpike. She put on her hazards and pulled over to change it.
"She did everything right," said Lee Sheridan, the owner of Two Maids.
Sheridan said another staff member's car was also pulled up behind McCoy's to help. They had their hazards on too, but Sheridan said that didn’t stop another driver from crashing into them from behind.
"[They] struck the rear of the vehicle behind Paige's, pushed that vehicle into Paige's vehicle, and spun it essentially into her, which broke her leg and essentially threw her into the median,” Sheridan said.
Edwards said she's been by her friend's side at the hospital as much as she can since the crash.
"Her femur is broken and her fibula and tibia are broken," Edwards said. "She has currently gone through three surgeries. She is getting a fourth surgery [Friday]. Right now, all that they've done is put external fixation on her leg to keep it straight and stable, and the hope is to put a rod in her leg to help with the injury.”
McCoy will receive workers' compensation for her injury, and the community has also been stepping up to help.
A GoFundMe has raised close to $8,000 for her as she continues her healing journey.
"I'm completely shocked by the amount of people that have been able to reach out, that have been able to donate, share the word and all of that, because it's not easy,” Edwards said.
A spokesperson with the Virginia Beach Police Department said that the driver involved was cited for following too closely.
