Insurance minimums increase for Virginia drivers
Jan 16, 2025
HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia raised car insurance minimums this year in response to legislative amendments passed in 2021.
The law’s goal is to provide better financial protection for drivers in crashes and will allow drivers to have more coverage available to them.
When your policy renews this year, you will see the change of coverage.
Virginia's minimum liability coverage for the bodily injury or death of one person went up from $30,000 to $50,000. For two or more people, it jumped from $60,000 to $100,000.
The changes were created to align with the rising costs that happen with car accidents.
10 On Your Side reached out to one insurance group in Virginia Beach. It said in regards to the insurance minimum increasing, it is seeing rates increase but only clients who had lower limits. The increase in premium is due to the increase in coverage.
Montrell Thomas, who has been driving for more than 16 years, said he’s OK with the changes, adding he rather be safe than sorry.
The insurance group wrote in a statement: “Sometimes you make mistakes, so you want to protect the person that you could possibly injure. You never know who's in the car in front of you or behind you.”
