KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City police say a 36-year-old man killed in a Northland homicide this week died during an argument. He’s also the same man involved in a murder case from 2019. A KCPD spokesperson couldn’t confirm what the victim, Colton Stock, and another man were arguing about. Tuesday’s shooting happened near NE 38th and N. Lister Avenue. Stock was found dead outside the house. Stock was previously acquitted from a first-degree murder charge stemming from 2019. During courtroom testimony, Stock confessed to shooting Matthew Calkins, 25, but that he did it in self-defense. Prosecutors also accused Stock of dismembering Calkins’ body and burning the remains. 18-year-old charged in October Kansas City homicide Calkins’ loved ones say they refuse to celebrate Stock’s demise, but Tuesday’s shooting provides them with closure of sorts, closing a dark chapter in their own lives. “They’re glad he’s gone. They hope he rots in hell,” J.D. Calkins, Matthew’s brother, said on Thursday. “I pray for my mom. My mom's gone through a lot.” Stock was acquitted of the first-degree murder charge by a Clay County jury in December 2022. However, he was convicted of two lesser charges, and sentenced to two four-year prison sentences. “This is basically closure to me. It's the end of a chapter. I wish I knew where my brother's body parts were, which would have been 'I love you, bro,' J.D. Calkins said on Thursday. The only portion of Calkins’ body that could be recovered was his torso. In September 2023, a Missouri appeals court reduced stock’s sentence to four years, crediting him for time served in jail. Stock was released from prison last September. Kansas City police say another man was found in that Northland home on Tuesday and was unconscious when officers arrived. As of Thursday, he’s listed in critical but stable condition.
