COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Lincoln University in Jefferson City held its Founders’ Day Convocation on Thursday.
University officials say the tradition celebrates the school's continued mission of education, diversity and service.
The annual event commemorates LU’s founding in January 1866 by Civil War veterans of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantries, a press release from the school says. Lincoln Institute opened in Jefferson City on Sept. 17, 1866, with two students. In 1887, Lincoln added college-level classes to the curriculum, the release says.
The school became a land-grant institution in 1890 and eventually changed its name to Lincoln University when it became a four-year institution, the release says.
