Frankfort Parks Department investigating dead deer, chickens at TPA Park Zoo

FRANKFORT, Ind. — The City of Frankfort's Parks Department is investigating what it calls "a tragic incident" that occurred on Thursday at the Frankfort Parks Department Zoo.
During a routine check of animals, zookeepers said they found a deer in distress, as well as one deer and two chickens dead in a barn.
"We are deeply saddened by this event as these animals have been in the care of the Frankfort Parks Department for many years," said Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets. “We are following the protocols advised to us from DNR and the USDA."
However, this is not the first time Frankfort has been cited for conditions involving the deaths of animals.
Just days prior, FOX59/CBS4 received a USDA inspection report that found 78 birds died at the same facility over just five months, during a routine inspection conducted on Dec. 11.
The zoo's avian species population was reduced from 136 birds to 58, the report stated. Employees of the facility also were allegedly barred from offering a written program of veterinary care.
Additionally, the report showed multiple violations taking place at the TPA Zoo. These included:
No proof of an active contingency plan
An exposed dig barrier in a twilight exhibit, which could cause the three foxes housed there to escape, be trapped or be injured
A cooler meant to store fruits and vegetables accumulating debris, such as tree leaves and molded vegetables
Three chickens walking outside of their designated enclosure
The City of Frankfort said it is actively working to continue following proper protocols. Per Mayor Sheets, the situation involving the dead deer and chickens was immediately reported to Purdue University Veterinary Hospital, DNR, and the USDA.
The deer found alive but distressed is currently undergoing medical attention at the Purdue University Animal Hospital. The City said it will be monitored closely by veterinarians.
Purdue University is analyzing the animals' causes of death, and the Frankfort Police Department is currently investigating all available evidence. This includes footage from six security cameras found around the zoo.
