National Radon Action Month raises awareness about deadly gas
Jan 16, 2025
BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Radon is a deadly gas that could be inside your home right now — and you wouldn’t even know it. It’s colorless, odorless, and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US, with non-smokers being particularly at risk.
Radon forms from the decay of uranium in the soil. In North Dakota, high levels of uranium in the ground increase the likelihood that radon will enter your home.
Experts say one in 15 homes in the US has elevated radon levels. You cannot see, smell, or taste radon. The only way to know if it’s in your home is to test for it.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. It affects non-smokers and smokers alike. In North Dakota, the risk of radon exposure is higher because of the amount of uranium in the soil.
Testing for radon is simple and should be done every two to three years. Winter is the best time to test because homes are sealed, which gives more accurate results.
The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality is offering 1,000 free radon test kits. These kits are available to help you test your home for radon.
To get a free radon test kit, visit the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality’s website.
