BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — On Jan. 14, federal prosecutors told the family of Ronald Greene they would not be filing charges for the Louisiana State Troopers involved in his deadly arrest. Mona Hardin, mother of Ronald Greene, said she wasn't surprised by the news, but felt the same way when she first learned of his death. In 2019, Ronald Greene was beaten and stunned by Louisiana State Troopers, after a police chase in Union Parish in northern Louisiana. Body camera footage that was released two years later, shows Greene getting dragged by police and pleading for his life. He died from his injuries. Hardin said originally her family was told he died in a car accident. "We thought, mind you, we were told Ronnie was killed in a car accident, and we took procedures," said Hardin. "We asked the funeral homes around here what the procedures are to bring Ronnie back," she said. Earlier this week, federal prosecutors decided no charges will be filed against the five officers involved, and none will serve jail time. "It's been in our face how I saw my son being killed by these troopers," said Hardin. On Wednesday, Jan. 15, the fifth officer involved, Chris Harpen, entered into a plea of no contest in court in Union Parish. He was originally sentenced to six months in prison but then changed to just probation. His attorney Eugene Cicardo, Jr. told our sister station, KTVE in Monroe that Harpen chose this to allow the case to close and bring peace to everyone. "Chris felt that he wanted to take the high road, and because of the minor nature of the Nolo plea and the sentence, that he did take the high road, put an end to this and let everyone start the healing process," he said. Hardin said after learning of the hearings, there will never be justice for her son. "There'll be no satisfaction. There'll be no closure. But for my son to be killed the way he was tortured or handcuffed and shackled, everyone needs to look at those details," she said. Department of Justice finds Louisiana State Police engaged in unconstitutional use of force, calls for further reforms Hardin said the family is still waiting to get the results from a federal wrongful death lawsuit.
