BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Twelve and a half years. That’s how long the family of Steve Alvidrez has been waiting for something akin to justice.
Alvidez, then the chief of the Kern High School District police department, was killed when a hit-and-run driver struck his Harley on Highway 99 south of Delano, in June 2011.
His wife, Ramona, seated on the back of the bike, survived.
The car left the scene. Witnesses described it as a gold Chevy Cavalier. California Highway Patrol investigators interviewed Lilly -- who had a 2000 gold Chevy Cavalier, according to court documents. He admitted being in a crash that night but said he couldn't recall anything else because he was drunk.
Alvidrez's motorcycle left an imprint in the front license plate of Lilly's car, which had front end damage.
Yet Lilly was not charged in the case for more than a year – and when he was, he disappeared. It's not yet clear how he was finally located, or where he spent all of those missing years.

He was arrested Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport, according to booking records. Lilly, now 37, is due in court Friday to answer to charges of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and more. He's being held without bail.
Alvidrez, age 52, was killed shortly before midnight on June 17, 2011, when a car slammed into him from behind. The car left the scene.
Law enforcement officials and Alvidrez family members declined to comment on Thursday.
Alvidrez’s son, also named Steven, offered a statement on behalf of the family:
“We are deeply grateful for the time, dedication, and perseverance of the DA's office and CHP for delivering justice in honor of our father, Chief Steve Alvidrez. He would be abundantly proud of the professionalism and honored that this tragedy has ended with an arrest. Our entire family and community can have some closure knowing this person can’t hurt us or anyone else now that he’s behind bars,” said Steven.
