ExOakland Mayor Sheng Thao indicted months after FBI raid: report
Jan 16, 2025
Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is reportedly now facing criminal charges, months after a shocking raid by the FBI raid.
Thao, 39, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday, a source familiar with the matter told the San Francisco Chronicle. The source said federal officials plan to announce details of the indictment Friday morning. Others, who were not identified, were allegedly indicted alongside Thao.
The FBI raided Thao’s home in June 2024, which likely contributed to her losing a recall election in November. Her last day in office was Dec. 18.
“[The raid] definitely had a huge negative impact on the recall,” Thao old KRON4 last month. “The FBI has told me I’m not the target of this, although they won’t come out [and say it].”
Thao’s home was one of four raided that day, which also included IRS investigators and U.S. Postal Service inspectors.
Several other locations were searched as part of a larger operation, including the offices of Oakland’s garbage vendor, California Waste Solutions, and the homes of the company’s CEO David Duong and his son Andy Duong.
The investigation is reportedly related to alleged campaign finance violations, according to KRON4.
After the raid, Renia Webb, a former chief of staff for Thao who’s now running for mayor herself, accused Thao and her boyfriend, Andre Jones, of running a pay-for-play operation.
