New Brockport warming center opens in time for next week's cold temperatures

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With frigid temperatures expected early next week, keeping residents safe and warm is the top priority for a new warming center opening in Brockport.
Officials believe this warming center will save lives. With those cold temperatures expected soon, there was added urgency to making sure this opened now.
It is located at the Brockport First Baptist on Main Street, and was part of a collaboration between Oak Orchard Health and Monroe County Human Services Department.
New York State Assemblyman Steve Hawley said, "this opening couldn't have been better planned with the temperatures we are expecting next week."

Pastor Dan Brockway with First Baptist Church said during the ribbon cutting that he's heard testimonies from clients who might've died if the warming center did not exist.
Along with the warming center those who stay will receive a free bag with essentials like hot hands hand warmers, a thermal emergency blanket, and hygiene products and snacks. There is also a food pantry for those who need it.
County Executive Adam Bello explained to News 8 why it was so important to have a center in Brockport.
"We're really making sure we're reaching residents in every corner of the county. We need to make sure the community is armed with all the info they need that individuals who are unhoused know where these shelter spaces are, know where to find them and can stay warm."
Bello also added that RTS will bring those in need to any warming center free of charge throughout the county.
The CEO of Oak Orchard Health says there are more warming centers in the making including one in Wyoming County.
This warming center will be open as needed during the week. Those utilizing will also have access to services from the county and local nonprofits to make sure their health needs are met.
