The Muni’s massive wraparound bar framed with golfing gear seats 35. | Mykl Wu/H2 The Muni opens Friday, January 17 with high-tech simulators, “Don Daly” cocktails, and Caddyshack playing on loop D.C.’s surprise new clubhouse of sorts comes swinging in hot this weekend. The Muni brings Logan Circle’s nightlife strip a stylish spot to snack on pizza and sip spiked iced teas while working on their game. The Muni opens Friday, January 17, on the second floor of the Mai Place apartment building (1400 14th Street NW). The six-story building’s developer Jim Abdo is a partner on the playful new project, which is operated by H2 Collective — the Hilton hospitality brothers’ prolific D.C. group behind places like El Rey, Cafe Colline, Crimson, and Chez Billy Sud. Once the pandemic subsided, Abdo decided to transform his former office space into a sprawling bar with room for 280 customers at a time. The Muni’s name and theme pay homage to the team’s shared love for municipal golf courses. Mykl Wu/H2 The 1800s-era building shows off its exposed brick walls and wooden beams. The Muni sits atop Players Club, H2’s retro-styled drinking den with arcade games, DJs, and food ordered in from its Shake Shack neighbor. “We like to say the Muni is the ‘graduate’ of Players Club,” says H2’s regional operations manager Chris Janiak. A door to the left of Players Club leads the way up to the Muni, where a “pro shop” upon entry invites customers to dress the part with for-sale swag like embroidered caps and customized golf tees. Mykl Wu/H2 The putting green area at the Muni is enabled with all sorts of games. The Muni’s Mad Men-like look embraces the sport’s midcentury-era rise to fame. Old-school photos of golfing greats join tufted leather couches, plenty of preppy plaid accents, and a handsome green paint job. Riffs on country club classics include a vodka-fueled “Transfusion,” Screwdriver-esque “Breakfast Ball,” and “Don Daly” spiked with Don Julio ($14-$15) and mostly canned beer list. A short selection of drinking snacks include 10-inch pizzas, chicken tenders, and fries. (“We aren’t going for a Michelin star,” jokes Janiak of the no-frills food menu.) High-tech virtual simulators let patrons aim for a hole in one on some of the world’s most iconic courses, from St. Andrews in Scotland to Torrey Pines in San Diego, and tee time prices starting at $50 per person. Games aren’t limited to golf; customers can also throw a football and shoot penalty kicks on an interactive darts display. Nine-foot-long putting greens double as spots to play games like “putt” pong and tic-tac-toe. The Muni keeps the party going until as late as 2:45 a.m. on weekends. Daily hours start at 5 p.m. during the week and noon on weekends. Entertainment also comes in the form of 20 TVs, which plan to show love for D.C. sports teams. The NFL Washington Commanders face off against the Detroit Lions in the playoffs on Saturday night. And fans of cult classic Caddyshack are in luck at the Muni, with the 1980 hit being broadcasted on loop on two huge projectors near the bar. And there’s an actual chance the comedic sports movie’s star Bill Murray could show up one day and hit a few rounds. “I’m friends with his sons when I lived in Charleston,” says Janiak.
