GILROY, Calif. (KRON) -- Three Hollister High School students were killed in a collision on Shore Road on the outskirts of Gilroy Tuesday night. San Benito County Sheriff Eric Taylor identified the trio killed as Anzhel Villegas-Lemus, 17, Victor Lujan, 17, and Brandon Alarcon, 18. "This kind of situation rattles any community, but especially a small one like ours," Taylor said. Shore Road winds through a rural area midway between Hollister and Gilroy connecting Highways 25 with San Felipe Road. Visibility on the two-lane road is poor at night. California Highway Patrol officers said Tuesday's fatal crash happened when the high school students' car veered into oncoming traffic where Shore Road curves near Lake Road and slammed head-on into another car. Three teens were killed. Mourners leave flowers for a memorial on Shore Road Jan. 15, 2025. (KRON4 Photo) Only one teenager in the car -- who was sitting in the front passenger seat -- survived and was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. The second driver, a woman in her mid 20s, suffered serious injuries. A memorial for a previous fatal crash can still be seen near Tuesday's crash site. Flowers surround a cross with the name Eliseo "Cheo" Balderas-Tena written across it. Mourners are creating a new makeshift memorial with candles and flowers for Villegas-Lemus, Lujan, and Alarcon. One Hollister High School student, Marcelino, told KRON4, "They had their whole life ahead of them. I lost my friends." In 2016, a Gilroy High School football player suffered life-threatening injuries when a big rig caused a collision on Shore Road at Lake Road, according to Gilroy Dispatch. The 16-year-old student was on his way to school when the big rig's trailer drifted into the path of the student's car. In 2019, a 30-year-old Hollister man was killed on the same stretch of Shore Road when he attempted to pass another vehicle, the dispatch reported. The driver was ejected from his vehicle and died. An old memorial from a previous year's crash is seen along Shore Road on Jan. 15, 2025. (KRON4) Three teens, ages 13, 13, and 16, were killed in a crash on Shore Road near Fairview Road in 2004. The group was traveling in a stolen Jaguar when it struck a power pole and burst into flames, according to the dispatch. CHP officers are still investigating what caused Tuesday's tragic collision.
