(FOX40.COM) — A Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist was arrested in Sacramento County on suspicion of possessing child pornography, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. The agency said that a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children eventually led to the Wednesday morning arrest of Darrin Bell. Bell has worked for decades as a cartoonist, with some of his better-known comic strips being "Rudy Park" and "Candorville." He won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning. The sheriff's office said that the tip was regarding someone uploading 18 files of child sexual abuse material. Alleged Border Patrol operation in Northern California sparks controversy An investigation by the Sacramento Valley Internet Crimes Against Children unit determined that 134 videos were located and linked to one account, which was controlled by Bell, the sheriff's office said. Detectives from the unit served a warrant at Bell's home in Sacramento County and recovered evidence, including child sexual abuse material generated by artificial intelligence, the agency said. "This case was the first arrest by Sacramento Valley ICAC where possession of computer-generated/AI CSAM was charged against a suspect," the sheriff's office said. Bell is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail with a bail of $1 million and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Bell, according to his Pulitzer biography, began his career while attending UC Berkeley and went on to freelance at the San Francisco Chronicle and Oakland Tribune.
