(KRON) -- Loren Taylor launched a formal bid for Oakland mayor on Thursday. The former District 6 councilmember rolled out a campaign website and filed campaign paperwork Thursday morning. "Business-as-usual politics in Oakland has failed us," Taylor wrote on X. "And now the same political operatives who installed the recalled mayor and brought us to the brink of bankruptcy want us to once again trust their pick." "We need fresh energy and new leadership that ensures every dollar of our budget serves the practical needs of our residents -- not fighting ideological crusades," he continued. "If we keep voting for more of the same we will get exactly what we voted for." In his post, Taylor also revealed he recently faced a "struggle with a rare disease," and faced "major organ failure." "I fought for my life in December," he said. "Now I'm back and 100% again! And my faith tells me there is more work for me to do." Taylor was narrowly defeated by former Mayor Sheng Thao in the 2022 Oakland mayoral election -- losing by just 677 votes in the city's ranked choice voting system. Thao was recalled in last November's election after a tumultuous two years in office during which the home she shared with her partner was raided by the FBI. Response time for Oakland Hills fire delayed due to recent budget cuts, station closures The former mayor suggested the raid was the result of a right-wing plot, which Taylor called "ridiculous." A third-generation Oaklander, Taylor served on the board of directors for the West Oakland Health Council, was a board member of 100 Black Men of the Bay Area, and was an advisory council member for the Center for Youth Wellness. He represented Oakland's District 6 in the Oakland City Council from 2019 through 2023.
