Eagles: With Nakobe Dean out, future is now for Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jan 16, 2025
PHILADELPHIA — After the Eagles lost inside linebacker Nakobe Dean to a torn patellar tendon in last week’s wild-card round, attention quickly turned to Oren Burks to replace him for Sunday’s divisional playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Burks filled in the rest of the way against Green Bay and had started in Week 17 against Dallas. But rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr. will also see action this week.
Trotter recovered Burks’ forced fumble on the opening kickoff against the Packers, both players having been active on special teams most of the season.
“We’ll probably get Trot (on the field),” defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. “We’re not afraid to put him in there. I think Trot’s got a good future, and that future may be now. He’s got good instincts. Really likes the game. He’s smart. He’s got a lot of good qualities.”
Trotter’s father and namesake played eight years with the Eagles, and the “Axe Man” is enshrined in the Eagles Hall of Fame. Trotter Jr. was rated the No. 1 high school linebacker in the country coming out of St. Joseph’s Prep, where he won back-to-back PIAA Class 6A championships.
Trotter Jr. went on to have a standout career at Clemson before the Eagles drafted him in the fifth round with the 155th overall pick last year.
“I definitely feel like I’m ready,” Trotter Jr. said. “I prepared every single week like I was going to start. I try to make sure I’m always on top of whatever I need to do as far as mentally and preparation-wise. I just try to look up to the veterans to see how they prepare as well. That’s all you can really do. I just have full faith in God, that he’ll be with me and guide me on the field.”
He added that playing in the regular-season finale against the Giants, when most starters were rested, provided valuable experience.
“Those reps helped out a lot,” Trotter Jr. said. “In practice, I was getting some reps and doing what I could to make sure I was getting better and working on my craft, but getting real game reps definitely helps, especially learning from the veterans all season. I’m preparing to make the most of every opportunity that I get, and if I get in there, I need to do my job to help the team win.”
Trotter is getting practice reps next to All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun, who will inherit the green dot and headset to relay defensive plays from the sideline, which had been Dean’s responsibility.
“Zack took me under his wing and has been teaching me everything he’s learned and being a great veteran guy,” Trotter said. “I really appreciate him and I appreciate the whole linebacker room, the older guys in the room. I’m just trying to soak it all in and try to learn from them and gain knowledge.”
Baun is looking forward to seeing more of Trotter in the middle on gameday.
“Trot is definitely ready,” Baun said. “I know because I’m practicing with him, I’m playing with him. He’s been ready for a long time now. He’s really excited, and I’m excited for him and Oren.”
Burks spent four years in Green Bay and two in San Francisco before signing a one-year contract with the Eagles last spring. He has started 17 career games and appeared in 108. He has played 147 snaps this year.
“Even though we haven’t played a lot this season because Nakobe and Zack have done such a great job, we’ve taken mental reps,” Burks said. “We’ve stayed sharp. It’s tough to see Nakobe go down. He was playing great football. But the mentality you have to have is that it’s next man up, and we’re the next men.”
