HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) -- A Chesterfield County man has been sentenced to 40 years in connection to a deadly June 2023 shooting in Hopewell that killed a 28-year-old man.
On Wednesday, Jan. 15, Kristopher Lorenzo Miller was sentenced to 40 years -- to be served in a state penitentiary -- in connection to a June 2023 homicide in Hopewell.
At 6:43 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2023, officers responded to the 1000 block of Langston Park Drive for the report of shots fired.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found 28-year-old William Jamal Claiborne with a gunshot wound to his right arm, which reportedly traveled to his chest.
According to the Hopewell Police Department, Claiborne was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
Police said detectives continued to develop leads which led to the arrest of 21-year-old Jamari Antonio Taylor of Hopewell and 20-year-old Miller of Chesterfield County.
In Sept. 2024, Taylor pled guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to a 50-year active sentence to be served in a state penitentiary, according to police.
Miller also entered a guilty plea in connection to the homicide case in Sept. 2024 and, on Wednesday, he was sentenced to 37 years for first-degree murder and three years for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
According to police, the court made the following comment in regards to Miller's sentencing:
“This sentence was geared towards deterrence of other criminals/shooters and retribution for the defendant’s senseless and violent actions,” the court said.
