MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A state policing board recommended to decertify a now-former Memphis police officer, which means they believe he should no longer be allowed to work in law enforcement in Tennessee. It was a default decision, since Joshua Hawkins didn't show up to the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission's informal hearing Thursday. He has a chance to attend the meeting to defend himself. Hawkins didn't answer when his name was called at the hearing. Commissioners were set to talk about the recommendation made by the Memphis Police Department. According to state records WREG Investigators uncovered, Hawkins had worked for MPD since August 2018. In October, MPD's command staff sent a notice to the state. It revealed he left the job, and they no longer want him working in law enforcement in Tennessee. Request MPD sent to the state The decertification request stated in November 2023, while Hawkins was on duty and "operating his marked patrol car," he struck a citizen's vehicle and caused minor damage. The driver in the car he hit "complained of non-life-threatening injuries," but Hawkins reportedly "persuaded three passengers in that vehicle to forego medical attention" since the ambulance and traffic investigators would take a while to get to the scene. It goes on to allege that Hawkins gave an incorrect name and ID number, he didn't notify a supervisor and left the scene of the crash without a taking a report. The driver, though, took a photo of his patrol car and badge numbers. A report was filed hours later. Hawkins was then cited, and an internal investigation was launched. In May, Hawkins left MPD before an administrative hearing was held and before he could be disciplined. Back in 2022, WREG Investigators requested Hawkins employment files, which listed past policy violations. In 2019, he was suspended 23 days for continuing to show up to his estranged wife's apartment and getting a colleague to run the tags of a car that picked up her up. In 2021, he got in trouble for not keeping his body camera on the entire time while responding to a car crash involving a possible DUI. POST will hold a former meeting Friday to sign off on the default decertification recommendation. WREG has requested Hawkins' department photo as well as his employment files again to find out more about what happened try to get his side of the story.
