JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) - The Mississippi House passed a massive tax reform bill on Thursday, January 16. Lawmakers passed the "Build Up Mississippi Act" (House Bill 1) by a vote of 88-24. House Bill 1, authored by Rep. Trey Lamar's (R-District 8), would result in an estimated $1.1 billion income tax cut for Mississippians in the next 10 years. The ultimate goal is to eliminate the income tax completely. Mississippi advocates call for regulating unlicensed care homes The bill creates a new 5% sales tax on motor fuels, generating $400 million annually for the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). Supporters of the bill emphasize saving money for working Mississippians, but others worry that such a cut in revenue will drain funding for essential services. "“Today, the Mississippi House of Representatives took a transformative positive step by passing House Bill 1, the Build Up Mississippi Act, with bipartisan support. This crucial legislation paves the way for a brighter economic future for our state, delivering a comprehensive tax reform package designed to uplift Mississippians, support our infrastructure and PERS system, and empower local governments," said House Speaker Jason White (R-Miss.). The bill now moves to the Mississippi Senate for consideration.
