KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jackson County prosecutors have charged an 18-year-old man in connection to a deadly shooting in Kansas City in October 2024. Mikael Hickman-Perry is charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. According to court documents, Kansas City police officers were responding to a medical call just after 5:30 a.m. on Oct. 24, 2024, in the area of East 17th Street and Cambridge Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they located the victim with apparent blood on his face, hands and shoes suffering from apparent trauma to his head next to two trash cans. The victim, identified as 18-year-old Christopher Avila, was pronounced dead at the scene. KC man pleads guilty to calling in false threat at government building Hickman-Perry, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was taken into custody. Witnesses on the scene described hearing an argument and then multiple gunshots. Security cameras showed a red/orange Jeep Renegade arrive on scene and then it’s seen leaving the scene. Family of the victim said he was last seen leaving a residence with Hickman-Perry, who is known to drive a red/orange Jeep. Detectives later located the suspect vehicle, which appeared to have blood splatter on the ceiling. Large amounts of blood was also found on the inside with signs that someone was trying to clean it, court documents say. A person he was with started acting crazy. Hickman-Perry then told her that "everything went left" but would not elaborate on what that meant. Download the FOX4 News app on iPhone and Android The Jackson County Medical Examiner found lacerations and gun muzzle strike marks on the left side of the victim’s scalp during the body exam, according to court documents. The victim also suffered two apparent gunshot wounds, one to the center of the back and one grazing the left shoulder. Hickman-Perry is being held on a $100,000 bond.
